Pipes & Drums
philosopher Lao-tzu is credited with saying, "A journey of a thousand miles
begins with a single step." This is
certainly true with the San Diego Law Enforcement Emerald Society Pipes &
its establishment in 1999, it has been a goal of the Society to establish a
Pipe & Drum band. While never lacking in desire, we lacked in skills,
knowledge and ability.
Finally in the summer of 2014, we took our "first step". After many years of careful thought and
deliberation - and a significant amount of procrastination - a group was called
together to evaluate assets, identify our needs and structure the plan to build
the band and accompanying Color Guard.
The continuing hope is that the band will be assisted financially by the
various law enforcement agencies and associations within San Diego County, truly
making the San Diego Law Enforcement Emerald Society Pipe & Drums the pipe
band for the entire region.
The mission of the pipe band is to participate in various law
enforcement ceremonies and charitable events benefiting law enforcement
agencies within San Diego County. The most solemn among these, of course,
is to play for those who have lost their lives in the line-of-duty. While we hope we never have that duty, we
feel it would be more meaningful to have actual law enforcement officers
playing for our fallen brother or sister in arms.
No previous musical experience is required to join the band and the
first practices were humbling, and some were to never return. However some
persevered and are working their way to proficiency, if not excellence in both
the bagpipe and drums.
addition to providing lessons, we are in the process of purchasing instruments,
identifying tartan, uniform specifications and badge & patch designs. The process is slow, but we are hoping to
create a band that honors the proud traditions of the Irish, while also paying
tribute to the contributions made to American law enforcement by those of us
with Irish heritage.
